Wear the Message

Creation Outreach

How You CAN DO IT!

There are two ways to "wear the message".
One is the how you appear to others, their first impression, so to speak and the Second (scroll down) is to literally "wear the message".

An expert in the marketing and leadership industry Brian Tracy states, "Perhaps the simplest example of the application of this rule, that everything counts, involves your image or appearance. You’ve heard it said that you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. The fact is that when you first meet a person, he makes a judgment about you in approximately four seconds, and his judgment is finalized largely within 30 seconds of the initial contact." (some studies say 3, others say 7, in any case it is FAST!) Our clothes are responsible for a large percent of the first impression because they cover a large percent of your body. Your grooming and hair also exert an inordinate influence on the way that you are perceived.

Ellen White states dress (or appearance) is a "living illustration" but that we are not to be consumed with it. "We are nearing the close of this world's history. . . . No one precise style has been given me as the exact rule to guide all in their dress. . . . Our sisters should clothe themselves with modest apparel. They should dress with simplicity. Your hats and dresses need not the extra trimmings that are put upon them. You are to be clothed with modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety. Give to the world a living illustration of the inward adorning of the grace of God. Let our sisters dress plainly, as many do, having the dress of good material, durable, modest, appropriate for this age, and let not the dress question fill the mind." {Ev 273.1} "Christians should not take pains to make themselves a gazing-stock by dressing differently from the world. But if, when following out their convictions of duty in respect to dressing modestly and healthfully, they find themselves out of fashion, they should not change their dress in order to be like the world; but they should manifest a noble independence and moral courage to be right, if all the world differ from them. If the world introduces a modest, convenient, and healthful mode of dress, which is in accordance with the Bible, it will not change our relation to God or to the world to adopt such a style of dress. Christians should follow Christ and make their dress conform to God's word. They should shun extremes. In dress we should seek that which is simple, comfortable, convenient, and appropriate." {HL 118} Modesty is more than conservative fashion, it encompasses the entire soul.

So it is important that everyday, everywhere you go, or even if you stay home, you dress appropriate to the Christian values: Clean, modest, comfortable, good quality, appropriate to the task, and attractive (plain). Plain dress does not mean ugly, in fact it is often the most attractive. Here is an example of two "modest" dresses one bold vs one simple and plain.

ugly clothsVS nice cloths

BUT your smile is also very important. In a survey conducted by the AACD (Dental association so results are not surprising, LOL), people were asked what they remembered most about a person after a first meeting (after the short initial contact) and smile was remembered over 45% of the time.

You NEED to smile! Smile without showing your teeth if they are yellow, twisted, or missing. People view white, straight teeth as 'more trustworthy' and know what they are talking about. While not all of us can spend $$$$ on our teeth you can keep them white and you can control how you smile and you can often smile a lot more than you do!!!

Wear the message, share the message, declare the message. While wearing a shirt is NOT likely to convert someone, it is a great tool for a group of workers doing outreach and it can open the door to conversations.

Evangelism is not to be trite nor should you feel you've done all your service to God by wearing a piece of clothing. These tools are just that tools. The worker does the work, the tool is his aid.

Ways to use these tools:

1. A personal reminder. Reminder yourself who you are and what you represent ALL day long. You represent God in all you do, everywhere you go. Are you filled with the Holy Spirit in your actions and speech?

2. Door openers. Be ready to answer the call. You wear these items to illicit a response, be willing to answer. Now is NOT the time to be defensive or argumentative. Just share why you believe what you do simply and in a loving, cheerful spirit

3. Gifts. For friends who are searching you might be sharing that which they need most. And since we are NOT once saved always saved, even encouraging your friends in the faith is a positive experience. You may be the reason someone STAYED in the church which is JUST as important as bringing in NEW believers.

Ties that tell the message of truth. --  “Jesus is coming soon” the sign proclaimed. The old ragged-looking man holding the sign stood facing the traffic at the corner.  Despite the fact that I cringed at the man’s delivery, I realized that I, too, wanted to be bold for Christ...." T-shirts that have the Adventist message, plus Pathfinders!! - -- "It all began when we wanted to do something revolutionary for God and His church.  In the winter of 2010, we used the gifts & talents that God gave us and started SDAshirts as a ministry that specifically provides custom design apparel especially for the Christian church community."
