Sending them a magazine subscription?
Can you make a difference just passing by?
Dropping a book in the mail? YES, absolutely YES!

There are hundreds of stories of people who were touched by received a small pamphlet or book at just the right time - just check your local church library. In many of the mission books colpourting has had an influence on church raising and church growth in countries all over the world including North America.

"More than one thousand will soon be converted in one day, most of whom will trace their first convictions to the reading of our publications." {Review and Herald, November 10, 1885}

"God intended that His people Israel should be light bearers to all the inhabitants of the earth... The Lord has ordained that the diffusion of light and truth in the earth shall be dependent upon the efforts and offerings of those who are partakers of the heavenly gift. He might have made angels the ambassadors of His truth; He might have made known His will, as He proclaimed the law from Sinai, with His own voice; but in His infinite love and wisdom He called men to become co-laborers with Himself, by choosing them to do this work." {PP 528.3}

"Love and loyalty to Christ are the spring of all true service. In the heart touched by His love, there is begotten a desire to work for Him... The church is organized for service; and in a life of service to Christ, connection with the church is one of the first steps. Loyalty to Christ demands the faithful performance of church duties. This is an important part of one's training; and in a church imbued with the Master's life, it will lead directly to effort for the world without." {Ed 268}

Ways to use Literature for evangelism

1. Small tracts, booklets, business size Bible cards, and pamphlets everywhere, is a mission work everyone is called to do! Literature can be shared every time you go to the store, gas station, bank, bathroom, etc. Add tracts to every bill or letter you mail. You can do this type of outreach on vacation or when traveling to a work event. Click here for a list of ideas where you can leave/share tracts and how to get started.

"There should be more earnest efforts made to enlighten the people upon the great subject of health reform. Tracts of four, eight, twelve, sixteen, and more pages, containing pointed, well-written articles on this great question, should be scattered like the leaves of autumn. Small tracts on the different points of Bible truth applicable to the present time should be printed in different languages and scattered where there is any probability that they would be read. God has placed at the command of his people advantages in the press, which, combined with other agencies, will be successful in extending the knowledge of the truth. Tracts, papers, and books, as the case demands, should be circulated in all the cities and villages in the land. Here is missionary work for all." {RH, Nov 4, 1875 par. 4}

2. Magazine subscriptions. Mailing out subscriptions to friends and family who would NOT otherwise listen to you is an influence you can afford! Signs of the Times is an excellent resource. Just one story (paraphrased) from a long time Adventist friend of mine:

"My wife and I just made it out of Germany under much duress. Relieved we made it to Canada we started a family here. Our baby sitter was a Seventh-day Adventist and her family purchased a Signs of the Times magazine subscription. Every month, month after month we threw it into the trash. We didn't want anything to do with that religion. Then one day a picture on the cover caused me to pause, it was a picture war with the title - will it ever end? We read that magazine." (Order Signs of the Times at your local ABC or online: AdventistBookCenter.com

3. Colporter work. Read the Colportuer Evangelist and the Colportuer Ministry by Ellen White (read online or download free). This is work is being neglected because we distaste door to door work, but we are not to let 'feelings' get in the way. In about 6 months one worker had over 50 contacts interested in various programs and 29 Bible studies by 'cold' door knocking in a town in Canada (not the easiest place to witness). The JW's are on the fast track to expanding their church with 'cold calls' (knocking on doors with no previous interaction or introduction) so it does work. The beauty of colporting is because you are offering a 'sale', people are more responsive because JW's don't sell anything. This sets you apart. Not to mention people are very interested in health and children's materials so you have something they WANT. I highly encourage you to at least read this article written to youth, but good for all ages. (Youth are the most effective and so are Father/Son or Mother/Daughter teams - people can't resist little kids and it again sets you apart from the JW's or LSD's.)

"The canvassing work, properly conducted, is missionary work of the highest order, and it is as good and successful a method as can be employed for placing before the people the important truths for this time. The importance of the work of the ministry is unmistakable; but many who are hungry for the bread of life have not the privilege of hearing the word from God's delegated preachers. For this reason it is essential that our publications be widely circulated. Thus the message will go where the living preacher cannot go, and the attention of many will be called to the important events connected with the closing scenes of this world's history." {CEv 5.1}

4. Books as Gifts. There are great books at the ABC on health, story books for kids, even romance, drama, and mystery books that are designed for outreach such as Project Sunlight and others.

"The holiday season is fast approaching with its interchange of gifts, and old and young are intently studying what they can bestow upon their friends as a token of affectionate remembrance. . . It is right to bestow upon one another tokens of love and remembrance if we do not in this forget God, our best friend. We should make our gifts such as will prove a real benefit to the receiver. I would recommend such books as will be an aid in understanding the word of God or that will increase our love for its precepts." {AH 478-9}
