Ellen White and Her role

Don't we believe in "sola scriptura"? Should we avoid using Ellen White in outreach?

First of all if you don't understand or believe in Spirit of Prophecy please download this FREE Bible study and book on the gift of prophecy. Using the BIBLE this book covers how you can know if someone has been given the gift of prophecy as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 14. I also encourage you to start here and dive deep into exactly what do Seventh-day Adventist believe.

Of course the Ellen White estate also has many answers to questions and objections about her. Across the internet many have taken it upon themselves to try and prove that Ellen G. White was a false prophetess, and that Adventism teaches error. Among the many accusations, there is one list the following website has spent time investigating. It's a list compiled by critics Dirk Anderson and Robert K. Sanders, claiming that Ellen White contradicted the Bible. These and other questions answered about Ellen White on the Adventist Defense Legue website: And last but NOT least is the Amazing Facts website:

Using Ellen White in Outreach:

So what if you believe in the inspired pen of Ellen White, isn't it dangerous to use her in outreach? I mean we don't want people to see as us the JW's or Mormon's who use prophets to usurp the Bible and it's truths. Yes that is true, but Ellen White stands the test and thus states apart from false prophets. Be NOT ashamed of God's word!!! We only have two choices God spoke through Ellen White or He did not. We can't say the Bible is first and if we have time or desire we can read Ellen White. God sent her as a messenger to us. She is as valid as Paul, Moses, or Daniel or she is NOT to be trusted at all. There is no middle ground on truth. Thus this website which is FOR Seventh-day Adventists is filled with Ellen White quotes and we are not ashamed of it.

However, we CAN prove what we believe from the Bible because Ellen White did NOT change or alter anything from it's pages. (Which is how we know she is a true prophet because her word never disagrees with scripture unlike various false prophets.) A great tip for Bible study is to use a plain Bible in a common translation like KJV or NLT and show all our beliefs using 'sola scriptura'. This goes for Strong's, Bible dictionaries, or any other supplement material. We use them for greater light and enjoyment but they are NOT necessary to understand salvation or even the three Angel's messages. Do not think you have to rely on men for understanding God's word for we are not 'sola scriptura' if so.

That being said, there are ways to use Spirit of Prophecy that will not be misunderstood and quite effective in outreach.

ONE. Use Ellen White to better understand the Bible and to transform your own life! Your testimony can NOT be refuted. Sharing how God has led you is key to witnessing. You don't have to quote Ellen White at every turn.

"By this shall all men know that ye are My disciples, if ye have love one to another." The more closely we resemble our Saviour in character, the greater will be our love toward those for whom He died. Christians who manifest a spirit of unselfish love for one another are bearing a testimony for Christ which unbelievers can neither gainsay nor resist. It is impossible to estimate the power of such an example. Nothing will so successfully defeat the devices of Satan and his emissaries, nothing will so build up the Redeemer's kingdom, as will the love of Christ manifested by the members of the church. Peace and prosperity can be enjoyed only as meekness and love are in active exercise." {5T 167.3}

TWO. Use the books at your disposal as tools of door opening and for those you can't otherwise reach.

"There are many places in which the voice of the minister cannot be heard, places which can be reached only by publications,--the books, papers, and tracts that are filled with the Bible truth that the people need. Our literature is to be distributed everywhere. The truth is to be sown beside all waters; for we know not which shall prosper, this or that. In our erring judgment we may think it unwise to give literature to the very ones who would accept the truth most readily. We know not what may be the good results of giving away a leaflet containing present truth." {ChS 153.2}

THREE. The inspired pen draws men to the Bible and speaks for itself. MANY, MANY souls have been saved by just getting a tract or book written by Ellen White.

"I saw them holding papers and tracts in one hand, and the Bible in the other, while their cheeks were wet with tears; and bowing before God in earnest, humble prayer, to be guided into all truth,--the very thing He was doing for them before they called upon Him. And when the truth was received in their hearts, and they saw the harmonious chain of truth, the Bible was to them a new book; they hugged it to their hearts with grateful joy, while their countenances were all aglow with happiness and holy joy." {CM 149.4}

"Still God has a care for His truth, and the time will come when these books will be sought for and read. Sickness or misfortune may enter the home, and through the truth contained in the books God sends to troubled hearts peace and hope and rest. His love is revealed to them, and they understand the preciousness of the forgiveness of their sins. Thus the Lord co-operates with His self-denying workers." {CM 150.2}

Bible Alone

Why use Ellen White at all if you believe in the Bible Alone?

I will answer that question with a question. Do you believe God has ALL the answers? Do you believe all those answers are in the Bible? What about a personal walk, prayer, messages from men of God - pastors, friends who love you, etc.? Are these not also God's way of reaching out to us? Of course!!! The Bible supports all these and encourages us to listen.

Ellen White states: "When God's Word is studied, comprehended, and obeyed, a bright light will be reflected to the world; new truths, received and acted upon, will bind us in strong bonds to Jesus. The Bible, and the Bible alone, is to be our creed, the sole bond of union; all who bow to this Holy Word will be in harmony. Our own views and ideas must not control our efforts. Man is fallible, but God's Word is infallible. Instead of wrangling with one another, let men exalt the Lord. Let us meet all opposition as did our Master, saying, 'It is written.' Let us lift up the banner on which is inscribed, The Bible our rule of faith and discipline." The Review and Herald, Dec. 15, 1885. {1SM 416.2}

"The Lord has sent his people much instruction, line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little, and there a little. Little heed is given to the Bible, and the Lord has given a lesser light to lead men and women to the greater light. O, how much good would be accomplished if the books containing this light were read with a determination to carry out the principles they contain! There would be a thousandfold greater vigilance, a thousandfold more self-denial and resolute effort. And many more would now be rejoicing in the light of present truth. My brethren and sisters, work earnestly to circulate these books. Put your hearts into this work, and the blessing of God will be with you. Go forth in faith, praying that God will prepare hearts to receive the light. Be pleasant and courteous. Show by a consistent course that you are true Christians. Walk and work in the light of heaven, and your path will be as the path of the just, shining more and more unto the perfect day." {CEv 37}

Ellen White states her books WILL lead people to the Bible and to Christ. Thus we are following that principle. Using ALL the resources GOD has given to make us effective Christians.
